Salem Police are asking for help from any members of the public who may have information about the shooting death of a 28-year old man, found dead Saturday afternoon on the sidewalk near a northeast Salem apartment complex.

Jose Luis Estrada was found near 2530 NE Broadway Avenue about 2 p.m. Saturday, December 23, said Chief Jerry Moore. He was transported by ground ambulance to the Salem Hospital and pronounced dead.  An autopsy is scheduled for today, Moore added.

Witnesses reported hearing a gunshot and saw Estrada collapse on the sidewalk near the parking lot of the complex, said the Chief.  Officers early on in the investigation identified a “vehicle of interest” which had been seen leaving the area -– a 1991 Geo Metro with Oregon license number RXB 614.  The Metro was located in the Salem area on Sunday about 3:30 a.m., but no further information about the relevance of the vehicle was released.

Salem Police detectives are continuing with the investigation, and anyone with information regarding the incident is asked to contact the Salem Police Department dispatch department at 503-588-6123 at any hour, or Detectives may be reached Monday through Friday between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. at 503-588-6050.
