MANCHESTER, England - Prosecutors say a British man faked his own death after selling more than $35,000 worth of products he didn't have to customers on eBay.

Jason Hart, 33, was sentenced Monday in Bolton Crown Court to two years in jail for perjury and conspiracy to defraud, The Daily Telegraph reported Tuesday.

Hart faked his death after failing to produce watches, cell phones, computers and tickets to concerts and sporting events he had advertised on eBay, prosecutors told Judge Steven Everett.

Hart, from Bolton, Greater Manchester, sent his local newspaper an obituary claiming he had died from a brain hemorrhage. He then used the newspaper clipping to convince his 28 victims he was dead.

He used the ill-gotten money to buy a car and other presents for a girlfriend, who was sentenced to 12 months of community service after pleading guilty to acquiring criminal property, the Telegraph reported.
