CRYSTAL RIVER, Fla. -- A man was shot and killed by police in Crystal River, Fla., Monday after he stabbed a police dog, authorities allege.

Police said in a release the shooting by Citrus County Sheriff's deputies occurred after the man stabbed and injured a dog and then charged the deputies, The St. Petersburg (Fla.) Times said.

The dog had been used in an attempt to apprehend the man, whose identity was not immediately released, officials said.

The dog, named Mito, survived the attack after receiving 30 stitches to repair a stab wound. The Times said the animal is expected to recover from the injury.

The county deputies were called to the scene of the shooting by a report of a suspicious person in the area. The man was reportedly acting agitated when deputies arrived.

Police said in the release that officers had encountered the man in the hours prior to the fatal shooting and that the individual had not appeared to pose a significant threat, the Times said.
