JAKARTA -- A military aircraft crashed into a hangar Monday while attempting to land at an airport in West Java, killing 24 people, Indonesian air force officials said.

The Fokker F-27 went down as it attempted to land during heavy rain at the Hasan Sadikin airport in Bandung, killing 17 members of the air force's elite squad, one trainer and six members of the crew, Indonesia's Tempo Interactive Web site reported.

Five planes in the airport hangar -- two Boeing 737s, two CN-235s and one MC 212-200 -- were damaged.

The military personnel were on a parachute training exercise, air force officials said, adding that poor visibility because of a rainstorm likely caused the accident.
