SOUTH MIAMI, Fla. -- A teenager has been charged with manslaughter in the death of his father, South Florida City Commissioner Jay Beckman, Miami-Dade homicide detectives said.

The 17-year-old suspect told police he was showing his father a shotgun Sunday when it slipped and accidentally fired, The Miami Herald reported Monday.

After interviewing the teenager, homicide detectives arrested him on a charge of manslaughter with a firearm, the Herald reported.

Beckman, 52, a civil engineer, had been a city commissioner since 2006 and had been raising his son alone since his wife's death of cancer in 1998, said South Miami Mayor Horace Feliu.

"I know he loved his son tremendously,'' Feliu said to the Herald. "He spoke of him all the time. I would often see them playing basketball together. He was what I would describe as a doting father."
