Both lanes of Highway 97 were closed for about an hour Wednesday night when a Sunriver man was critically injured after his pickup slid off the highway north of Vandervert Road in the Sunriver area south of Bend and struck a tree, said authorities.

Preliminary investigation by Oregon State Police (OSP) troopers from the Bend Area Command office indicates that Andrew Warner, 20, was traveling north on Highway 97 about 8 p.m. on January 3 when his pickup suddenly slid across the road, hit a tree, overturned, and came to rest on its left side.

Warner was transported by ground ambulance to St. Charles Medical Center in Bend by Sunriver Fire Department personnel.  He was listed in critical condition Thursday morning, and police did not have information available regarding safety restraint use, said the OSP news release.

In addition to Sunriver Fire Dept., assistance to OSP troopers at the accident scene was provided by Deschutes County Sheriff’s deputies and Oregon Department of Transportation personnel.
