COLUMBINE, Colo. -- Hundreds of people turned out in Colorado to quietly mark Monday's 10th anniversary of the slaying of 12 students and one teacher at Columbine High School.

Regina Evans, who was a sophomore at Columbine during the April 20, 1999, massacre, said she knew several of the victims.

"I sat next to Kelly Fleming in math," Evans said. "She was just the sweetest person you could know. I just couldn't understand."

Evans said she transferred to another school after the shootings because returning to Columbine was too difficult.

At a sunset vigil Sunday, friends and relatives of the victims, along with strangers, lit candles and placed flowers at each of the Columbine Memorial's 13 granite remembrances, The Denver Post reported.

The shooters at Columbine, students Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold, also wounded 23 other people before committing suicide. The shootings were the deadliest at a U.S. high school.
