Arab League seeks summit on terrorism

VIENNA -- An Arab League official told a U.N. commission in Austria Friday that an international conference under U.N. auspices should meet to define terrorism clearly.

Mohammad Ridhwan Bin Khadhra, the league's advisor for legal affairs, told a meeting of the U.N. Commission on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice that international cooperation in combating terrorism is hindered by the lack of a clear definition.

Bin Khadhra said it is important to differentiate between terrorism and a people's right to fight invaders and external aggression, Kuwait's Kuna news agency reported.

He also said it was important to draw a line between terrorism and Islam which is a religion that calls for love, tolerance and civilized coexistence.

Bin Khadhra suggested holding such international conference on terrorism under the sponsorship of the United Nations or at a special U.N. General Assembly meeting.
