First captured on security camera, and then captured by police, 37-year old Roger L. VanWormer now faces multiple charges related to Thursday’s armed robbery of a convenience store in southwest Redmond.

Sunny Malik, the owner of Daisy Quick Shop, offered a $1,000 reward Friday afternoon for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the robber, said Redmond Police officer Keith Knight.

Police obtained a search warrant for VanWormer’s residence and vehicle after receiving tips from the public, Knight said.  Members of the Central Oregon Emergency Response team were called in to assist Redmond Police because of the risk of a potentially armed and dangerous suspect, but officers said VanWormer was taken into custody without incident about 7 a.m. Saturday morning.

Evidence of the alleged crimes was seized during execution of the warrant, and VanWormer was lodged in the Deschutes County Jail.  He is charged with first-degree robbery with a firearm, menacing, second-degree theft, unlawful use of a firearm, and pointing a firearm at another.  Bail is set at $110,500, said Officer Knight.

The robber brazenly entered the store at 1242 SW Highland Avenue about 3:10 p.m. Thursday.  Brandishing a rifle and recorded on the store’s security surveillance camera, the suspect demanded money from the cashier and fled on foot with an undisclosed amount of cash, said Redmond Police Lt. Brian McNaughton.  The robbery prompted a 20-minute lockdown of nearby Lynch Elementary School while police unsuccessfully searched the area for the suspect.
