There are currently two school board positions up for election in the Redmond School District.  Positions 4 (currently held by Jim Erickson) and 5 (currently held by Tim Carpenter) are each four-year terms beginning on July 1, 2007, and ending June 30, 2011.

A person is eligible to serve as a board member if he or she is a registered voter of the district and has been a resident within the district for one year immediately preceding the election.  No person who is an employee of the district is eligible to serve as a board member while so employed.

The candidate filing period closes at 5 p.m. on March 15, followed by the elections for the board positions taking place May 15, 2007.  Those interested in serving on the Redmond School District Board of Directors may pick up an application at the Deschutes County Clerks office, 1300 NW Wall Street, Suite 200, Bend OR 97701, between the hours of 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The Redmond board consists of five members elected to serve overlapping four-year terms as non-salaried trustees of the school district.  As elected officials, they are responsible for the scope, depth and quality of education and is the official policy-making body of the school district.

In addition to establishing policies for the operation of the district, the board defines the philosophy of the district, determines educational goals and standards, authorizes curriculum revision or development, approves employment and termination of personnel, approves the budget and sets the tax rate, approves property purchases, approves new building plans, and hears grievances of employees, students, and citizens.

The responsibilities of a school board member require the unselfish giving of time and service.  There are endless number of meetings and school functions to attend; unlimited amounts of reports, agendas, proposals and other information to read and study; and a variety of difficult decisions to make.
