David Ellis of Lapine was transported to St. Charles Medical Center in Bend by Airlife late Wednesday afternoon, June 14th after being accidentally shot by his friend and roommate, Chester Detwiler.

Ellis, age 50, was seated on the couch in the living room when the accident occurred. Detwiler, in the kitchen, had taken a handgun from its case and began to walk toward Ellis to show the gun when he tripped over a wooden tack strip that secures the edge of the carpeting.

As he stumbled forward, the gun discharged and struck Ellis in the abdominal area.  According to the Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office news release, Ellis’ injuries are non-life threatening.

Detwiler attempted to phone 911 for assistance but was having trouble with the telephone, and instead drove the injured man to the Lapine Fire Station where he was aided by members of the Lapine Fire Department prior to the Airlife transport.
