Alcohol and icy road conditions may have contributed to a single-vehicle crash and rollover on South Century Drive that left the 18-year old driver dead and sent five others to the hospital early Saturday morning, authorities reported.

Ryan Tyson of La Pine was traveling north on South Century Drive near the entrance to the Crosswater subdivision, about one mile south of Spring River Road, when the accident occurred at 2 a.m., Sgt. Gary Cima said.  Tyson lost control of his 1993 Honda on the icy lane, the vehicle left the road, rolled several times, and came to rest upside down 40-feet from the highway.

Tyson was fatally injured in the crash, the sergeant said.

Four of the five unidentified passengers in the vehicle were taken by ambulance to St. Charles Medical Center (SCMC) in Bend by paramedics with the fire departments of both La Pine and Sunriver.

One passenger was driven to SCMC by a relative, Cima said, not requiring an ambulance transport.

Alcohol is believed to have been a contributing factor, Sgt. Cima said, but the investigation is continuing.
