On Saturday, June 17th at about 8 pm, volunteers of the Deschutes County Sheriff’s Search and Rescue Unit responded to the scene of a hiking accident at Smith Rock State Park near the Red Wall.

A 13 year old climber had been hiking in the area above Red Wall and somehow slipped and fell, sliding down a slope an unknown distance before landing on a ledge left of Misery Ridge.  According to a news release from the Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office, he remained on the ledge for an estimated 2 hours before being noticed.

Other experienced climbers in the area set up a system to lower the injured juvenile down from the ledge to a trail below, where he was treated by Search and Rescue medics for a possible lower leg injury. He was transported out in a wheeled litter to an awaiting ambulance and was taken to St. Charles Medical Center in Redmond for treatment.

Later investigation revealed that the teenager was a runaway from the Redmond area.
