The National Federation of State High School Associations has named Summit High School’s Boys Track and Field Coach Dave Turnbull as the 2006 Northwest Sectional Coach of the Year. Turnbull was selected from a competitive field of coaches from Oregon, Alaska, Montana, Washington, Idaho and Wyoming.

Turnbull has been coaching for nearly 20 years and says his involvement in track and field has been one of the greatest experiences of his life.

“Sports can change a student’s life direction,” he says. “Once a student athlete realizes their potential they find success at levels they’ve never experience before.”

Turnbull says that the commitment to track and field has helped many of his students in the classroom.

Many graduates of Summit’s girls and boys track and field programs are now competing and furthering their education at colleges across the country including Lane Community College, Oregon, Colorado and Cornell -– to name a few.

“Success breeds dedication and dedication breeds success,” he says. “Once a student experiences success they stick with it -– we see it in the many students who are continuing their education after high school.”

Turnbull says that community support of public school athletic programs shows students that they are valued and appreciated -– and that’s a real source of pride for students.

“Students just do better when they know that their friends, parents and the community are proud of them,” he says. “I am very proud of my coaching team, administrators, teachers and most importantly, our student athletes –- and what the future has in store for us all.”
