The City of Bend officially broke ground Wednesday for the new runway relocation project of the Bend Municipal Airport scheduled to begin March 26. The groundbreaking ceremony took place at noon on the east side of the airport at the Columbia Aircraft Manufacturing parking lot.

The new runway will, in accordance with the Deschutes County approved Airport Master Plan, be located 110' east of the current runway and will be 5200' long. Upon completion of the new runway, the old runway will be demolished. A Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) grant will pay for 95 percent of the estimated $10 million cost, and the additional five percent will be paid with a ConnectOregon grant.

Bend Municipal Airport Manager Greg Phillips also announced he recently became certified by the American Association of Airport Executives (AAAE).  The certification demonstrates the continuing commitment of providing a greater level of professionalism and competence in managing the Airport.  The certification exam included 15 major modules/topics on airport management and operations.
