A Wyoming couple was involved in a single vehicle fatal traffic crash Tuesday morning about nine miles east of Burns on Highway 20, resulting in the death of the passenger and minor injuries to the driver. Oregon State Police (OSP) said preliminary investigation suggests driver fatigue and an unrestrained passenger contributed to the accident and death.
Frome was using safety restraints and received minor injuries. She was transported by ambulance to Harney District Hospital in Burns.
Ted Frome, the driver’s 76-year old husband, was asleep in the rear seat and not using safety restraints when the accident occurred, OSP troopers said. He was pronounced deceased at the scene.
The couple was reportedly on their way to the Oregon coast to visit relatives.
OSP troopers from the Burns work site are continuing the investigation. Upon completion, it will be reviewed by the Harney County District Attorney’s Office.
Harney Emergency Medical Services and Oregon Department of Transportation assisted at the scene. The highway reopened to traffic about 12:30 p.m.
