Thirteen candidates have filed applications to fill the Bend City Council vacancy left by John Hummel who resigned earlier this month. The deadline was 5 p.m. Wednesday. During the last council meeting held March 7, council members agreed to an appointment process.
A special meeting will be held at 4 p.m. March 28 to narrow the list of potential candidates to be interviewed. Interviews are set tentatively for March 30 at 2 p.m. Both meetings are open to the public and will be held at Bend City Hall, 710 NW Wall Street. Mayor Bruce Abernethy has requested that each council member select their top five considerations to help the Council select approximately four to six applicants to interview.
Those applying to be considered for the council seat are Don Leonard, Bridget Fawn Burns, Mike Lovely, Nathan Hovekamp, Jeff Eager, Rockland Dunn, Randy Johnson, Peter Gramlich, Clint Chick, Tom Ware, Kathie Eckman, Gordon Phillips, and Frank Fiedler
Applicants submitted a four page application for Council’s review. The applicants must be:
- Qualified electors under State constitution and
- Residents within the city limits of Bend for at least 12 months prior to taking office.
The individual appointed to the vacancy will serve until December 31, 2008. The City Council is the policy and contract review board for the City of Bend and serves as the Bend Urban Renewal Agency, the urban renewal board for the City of Bend.
