Students to play in joint concert for Japanese community
For many, it will be the first time that they’ve left the comfort and familiarity of the Central Oregon region. Yesterday morning, nearly 40 Mountain View High School (MVHS) Band Students loaded up their suitcases and instruments and took off for a cultural exchange in Japan.
The group departed MVHS at 7 a.m., bound for Japan via the Redmond airport.
“This exchange is exceptionally significant as it builds relationships between students from across the globe through the international language of music,” says MVHS Band Director Ted Burton. “While our students may not be able to read the Japanese titles on the sheet music, they can all read and play the notes together and make beautiful music.”
Burton says students will stay in the homes of band students from Kogane High School in Matsudo, Japan. Students from both schools will practice together for several days leading up to a joint concert for the community on March 27.
The exchange between the two schools began 11 years ago. The Kogane High School band is expected to travel to Bend in 2008 for a joint concert for the community.
