Blogger heads to Iraq

A Berkeley, Calif., woman who considers herself an "old hippie" has headed to Iraq, where she hoped to be embedded with a U.S. Army unit as a blogger.

Jane Stillwater, 64, was sponsored by The Lone Star Iconoclast, a liberal weekly newspaper near President George Bush's ranch in Crawford, Texas, The San Francisco Chronicle reported. But as she boarded a plane Wednesday, she didn't know whether the military would find her a spot.

"Oh, yeah, her application looks fine," Army Spc. J. Wyatt Harper, a media embedding coordinator for Iraq told the Chronicle. "We're just trying to find a unit anywhere that will take her. There's a lot of people out there now."

The publisher of The Iconoclast said he hopes they do.

"I would like a source that doesn't necessarily adhere to the company line about what the soldiers are facing over there," W. Leon Smith, told the Chronicle.

Stillwater said she wants to write about the war for "real people."

In her final blog entry, she told readers if she can't write about the war, she'll spend three weeks, "wandering the streets of Kuwait City waiting for my flight home, searching for Internet cafes and trying to sell bootleg Girl Scout cookies."
