Bush takes fight with Congress on the road

FORT IRWIN, Calif. - Setting a U.S. troop withdrawal from Iraq deadline will send that country into more chaos, U.S. President George Bush told soldiers training in California.

Bush ate lunch with troops at the Fort Irwin, Calif., training facility before he told them that withdrawing from Iraq before "the job is done" would be like accepting defeat, The Washington Post reported.

Bush used his visit with the troops to apply pressure on congressional Democrats who want a date set for the withdrawal of combat troops in Iraq by adding it to war-funding legislation.

"Without approval of the supplemental funds in April, we will be forced to take increasingly draconian measures, which will impact Army readiness and impose hardship on our soldiers and their families," Bush said.

Bush has promised to veto any legislation that includes a withdrawal deadline.
