"I had a chance to reflect on the great sacrifice that our military and their families are making," the president said in a statement released by the White House. "I prayed for their safety, I prayed for their strength and comfort, and I pray for peace."

Bush said he found it "a joyous day for many people around the world" and "a day for us to reflect on the many blessings in our lives." The president wished everyone a "peaceful weekend" and "all the very best" to U.S. troops.

The Bushes were accompanied to the service by the president's parents, George H.W. and Barbara Bush, and his mother-in-law, Jenna Welch, the statement said.

The family's Easter dinner menu at their ranch in Crawford, Texas, included fruit, salad, ham, green chili cheese grits souffle, roasted orange molasses sweet potatoes and asparagus -- with coconut cake and ice cream for dessert.
