PHOENIX - Phoenix police on Monday began investigating a man's terror spree in a local neighborhood that included holding a 2-year-old boy at knifepoint.

Police are attempting to determine the identity of the man who terrorized a Phoenix neighborhood early Saturday and later died in police custody and the specifics associated with his crime rampage, the Arizona Republic reported.

Emergency calls from the neighborhood reported that the unidentified man was seen trespassing and falling from a house's roof onto a car. The man broke into an area home and took a 2-year-old boy hostage with a knife as police arrived.

"For every officer, that's an officer's worst nightmare, having a child held hostage like that," police Sgt. Andy Hill told the Republic. "Luckily, the child was let go."

After the uninjured child was released, police apprehended the man through the use of a stun gun. The newspaper said the man then died in custody on Sunday from undetermined causes.
