A high school sophomore was arrested yesterday after he was found to be in possession of three loaded handguns with extra ammunition on the campus of Todd Beamer High School in Federal Way, Washington. The guns, in addition to three others found later, were stolen early Thursday morning in a Pierce County residential burglary.
About 12:45 p.m., April 19, a Federal Way School Resource Officer (SRO) from Todd Beamer High School immediately began lockdown procedures when he received a tip that a student had guns on the school grounds.
The SRO located and detained the male student, recovering the three loaded handguns and additional ammunition. The student, whose name police did not release, told officers he didn’t intend to use the weapons for violent purposes and claimed to have brought them to school to sell.
The lockdown was lifted about 1:50 p.m. and approximately 1,600 students were sent home for the day. Classes resumed as usual Friday, with additional security presence in place.
Initial investigation by Federal Way Police determined the handguns seized from the Todd Beamer High School sophomore, and three others found at The Heights Apartments, had earlier been stolen in a residential burglary in Pierce County, but it was unclear if the student had participated in the theft.
The investigation is ongoing.
