BAGHDAD - A suicide car bomber succeeded in killing nine U.S. soldiers and wounding 20 more Monday while they were on patrol in Iraq's Diyala province.

The U.S. military said in a statement that one Iraqi civilian also was wounded in the attack, CNN reported.

A 10th U.S. soldier died in a separate incident involving a roadside bomb in Muqtadya.

Those blasts were among a series of deadly suicide attacks Monday. One bomber detonated a car laden with explosives near police vehicles in Baquba. A police general and five other officers were killed.

Another bomber killed 20 civilians and wounded 35 at a restaurant in Ramadi, west of Baghdad, CNN reported. Yet another suicide car bomber struck at a police checkpoint just outside Ramadi, killing four people and wounding six.

Seven people were killed in Baghdad by a suicide explosion that also wounded 16. Two car bombs struck near Iran's embassy, killing one and wounding three.

While violence threatened at any time, about 7,000 Iraqis publicly demonstrated against construction of a concrete wall around Adhamiya, a Sunni neighborhood in Baghdad, CNN reported.

Iraqi Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki has vowed "the construction will stop" and the U.S. military is reviewing the matter.
