Bend Driver Eludes Police after Dangerous Pursuit & Crash

Police are looking for a Bend motorist who failed to pull over for a traffic stop and led police on a wild chase including driving the wrong way on Highway 97 and nearly colliding head-on with a police car.  The driver lost control of his vehicle, crashed, and fled the scene on foot.

According to Lt. Darling of the Bend Police Department, this morning about 4:35 am a police officer attempted to stop a 1990 gray and primer Toyota pickup for a traffic violation. The driver failed to yield to the lights and siren of the police vehicle, and fled south of Bend on Highway 97. Attempting to elude, the driver went the wrong way in the northbound Highway 97 lanes of travel. The suspect nearly hit a Deschutes County Sheriff’s Deputy head-on near Baker Road.

The suspect lost control of his pickup, crashed into the concrete center median, and fled the scene on foot.  He is described as male, medium height and weight, with brown hair.

Police are following leads in an attempt to identify the driver, who remains at large. If caught and convicted, the suspect faces charges including Attempting to Elude a Police Officer, Hit and Run, Reckless Driving, and Reckless Endangering.
