City Offers Update on Council Race

Currently there are three open positions for Bend City Council for the year 2007. The elections for Bend City Council will be held the first Tuesday in November, 2006. Bend’s City Council is comprised of seven council members who, from among themselves, elect the Mayor. Council Members are elected to four-year terms.

The three openings in the upcoming election are for Positions 5, 6, and 7. At this time, five candidates are currently circulating petitions for the open positions:

Position #5: Derek Stevens and Mark Capell
Position #6: Wyvetta Wilson and Bill Friedman
Position #7: Chris Telfer

Requirements for Bend City Council election:
The petitioner must file a prospective petition with the City Recorder. Once approved, the petitioner should circulate the petition and gather 150 qualified signatures. When the signatures are gathered, they are verified by the Deschutes County Clerk's office. After the petition is verified, it becomes a qualified petition and must then be filed with the City of Bend’s City Recorder no later than Aug. 29th by 5:00 p.m.

Expectations for Bend City Council:
Candidates can expect to meet in the Council capacity at least four nights each month, i.e.- the first and third Monday and Wednesday.  Persons elected to the City Council are automatically placed on the Bend Urban Renewal Agency Board.
