WASHINGTON - The Defense Department announced Tuesday that 10 Army brigades are to be deployed to Iraq to replace soldiers rotating back to the United States.

About 35,000 soldiers face deployment between August and the end of December. The movements are not related to the increase in troops in Baghdad.

"Let me be real clear about this," said Pentagon spokesman Bryan Williams. "This deployment ... is not a decision with respect to the surge."

He said the Pentagon wants to give the soldiers in the units "the kind of predictability" they need to prepare.

The units involved are: 3rd Armored Cavalry Regiment, Fort Hood, Texas;

1st, 2nd and 3rd Brigades, 101st Airborne Division, Fort Campbell, Ky.; 4th Brigade, 10th Mountain Division, Fort Polk, La.; 1st Brigade, 4th Infantry Division, Fort Hood.

Also: 4th Brigade, 3rd Infantry Division, Fort Stewart, Ga.; 2nd Brigade, 25th Infantry Division, Schofield Barracks, Hawaii; 2nd Cavalry Regiment (Stryker), Vilseck, Germany; and 2nd Brigade, 1st Armored Division, Baumholder, Germany.
