A Redmond woman was struck and killed in a traffic accident Monday night while walking on Highway 20 about 5 miles north of Bend, Oregon on Gerking Market Road.

According to Lt. Deron McMaster of the Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office, deputies and fire personnel from the Bend Fire Department were called to the scene about 10:20 pm Monday, July 24th.  They found the victim, later identified as 33 year old Kimberly Jossart of Redmond, deceased at the scene.

McMaster said that a 2003 Acura 2-door car driven by Casey A. Haneberg, a 24 year old Beaverton Oregon resident, was eastbound on Highway 20W approaching the intersection with Gerking Market Road. The driver, according to McMaster, said that he saw Jossart walking in the highway and unsuccessfully attempted to avoid the collision by swerving to the left.  After the impact, the Acura crossed both westbound travel lanes and left the road where it came to rest.

Haneberg was uninjured and his passenger, Caitlyn Quwenikov, also of Beaverton, had very minor cuts and scrapes.

Oregon State Police and the Oregon Department of Transportation assisted the sheriff’s office in the investigation, with ODOT rerouting traffic around the accident scene for three to four hours during the scene investigation.

Deputies are continuing their investigation to determine whether alcohol was a factor in the accident.
