6.1 quake hits Laos, no injuries

VIENTIANE, Laos - A 6.1 magnitude earthquake shook western Laos Wednesday, with tremors being felt as far as Bangkok, Thailand, but there were no immediate reports of injuries.

The U.S. Geological Survey reported the quake hit at 3.56 p.m. Wednesday about 105 miles northwest of the Laotian city of Luang Prabang and 465 miles north of the Thai capital. The location is near the tri-border area of Myanmar (Burma), Laos and Thailand, also known as the Golden Triangle.

The Bangkok Post reported although there was no damage in the capital, Thai authorities evacuated several offices and high-rise buildings.

Another Thai media report said in Chiang Rai, the top of the historic Chomkitti Chedi containing sacred Buddha relics collapsed but no one was injured.
