La Pine man arrested for attempted murder with machete

A 54-year old La Pine man was arrested Thursday after he allegedly went to a La Pine residence and attempted to murder a man with a machete, authorities reported.

Deschutes County Sheriff’s deputies responded to a 911 call at 52525 Riverpine Drive, and found that the intended victim, Richard Todd Marcum, 43, and his friend Aaron Joseph Nesbaum were able to subdue and disarm the suspect, holding him until law enforcement arrived.

According to Deputy Deke DeMars and Sgt. Ronny Dozier, Richard Steven Winnop entered the home unlawfully and attacked Marcum with a machete.

Winnop was taken into custody and lodged in the Deschutes County Jail after treatment at St. Charles Medical Center in Bend for minor injuries he sustained during the struggle.  DeMars and Dozier report that Winnop will face attempted murder, first-degree attempted assault, and first-degree attempted robbery charges, among others.
