ATLANTA - The man with a dangerous form of drug-resistant tuberculosis has been identified as a 31-year-old personal injury lawyer in Atlanta.
Andrew Speaker is now in Colorado for treatment. He set off a two-continent search for people who had been in contact with him when he flew to Europe earlier this month for his wedding, returning via Canada.
Speaker's father-in-law, Robert Cooksey, works for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta, CNN reported. A spokesman said Cooksey, a microbiologist who has done research on TB for the National Center for Infectious Diseases, had advised Speaker as a relative but not as a CDC representative.
After his return to the United States, Speaker became the first person in years to be placed in involuntary federal quarantine. He currently is undergoing treatment in Denver.
