Gunmen kill priests, officer in Mosul

BAGHDAD -- Gunmen killed four Christian priests and a police officer in Mosul in northern Iraq Monday.

After shooting the police officer, the gunmen booby trapped the body so that it exploded and injured other officers who approached it, the Kuwait News Agency, KUNA reported.

Meanwhile, the U.S. Army was investigating a possible poison gas attack at a base in northeastern Baghdad.

A car exploded outside the base Sunday and there were reports of a colored gas in the area, a military statement released Monday said. Some soldiers who reported having difficulty breathing or teary eyes were treated at a base medical facility, KUNA reported.

The U.S. military reported Monday that eight soldiers had been killed in bombings, including four who died when a roadside bomb hit a vehicle northwest of Baghdad, KUNA reported.

Four other soldiers died in bombings in Baghdad, western Baghdad, east of Baghdad and the Diyala Province.

As of Monday, 15 U.S. soldiers had been reported killed in Iraq in June, KUNA reported.
