DETROIT, Ore. – The free fishing weekend event scheduled at Detroit Lake on Saturday has been cancelled, officials at the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife and the United States Forestry Service announced.

The youth event, originally scheduled Saturday at Hoover Campground from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. has been cancelled due to the presence of blue-green algae at Detroit Lake.

“Our goals for the event are to provide children with a fun experience and share with them the thrills that fishing has to offer,” says Greg Grenbemer, ODFW Marion Forks Hatchery Manager.  “However, at this time, we feel we could provide a more fulfilling fishing experience for the kids when the blue-green algae levels are low.”

ODFW and USFS encourage young anglers and their families to take part in other youth fishing events around the state.  A full list of events can be found on the web. http://www.dfw.state.or.us/free_fishing/events.asp
