MOSUL, Iraq - Police in Mosul, Iraq, said five people were killed in militant attacks in the city one day after a car bomb destroyed a bridge south of Baghdad.

The sources said 15 weapons were confiscated and five suspects were arrested in nearby Kirkuk after the attacks Monday, KUNA, the Kuwait news agency, reported. Among those killed in the attacks was an Iraqi police officer.

The attacks followed the bombing of a highway bridge Sunday that claimed the lives of three U.S. soldiers and wounded six others and an Iraqi interpreter, Alalam satellite TV reported Monday. Traffic on the country's main north-south expressway was blocked by debris from the explosion and the U.S. military said engineers were sent to the scene with heavy equipment to clear the highway.

Lt. Col. Garry Bush, a U.S. Army munitions officer, said the bomber stopped his vehicle while traveling north on the road and detonated the bomb near a support pillar of the "Checkpoint 20'' bridge crossing over the road.
