Nicaragua: Oretga's support dwindling

MANAGUA, Nicaragua - The popularity of Nicaraguan President Daniel Ortega has dropped considerably in the last few months, according to a recent poll.

The Cid-Gallup poll reported that Ortega's support base fell from 61 percent in February to 26 percent in June, The Miami Herald reported Thursday.

Ortega -- who was Nicaragua's president during the 1980s -- won reelection in November over a U.S.-backed candidate.

The once radical leftist Nicaraguan president has toned down some of his populist rhetoric since his first go around as president. He has, however, condemned other administrations that served during his 16 years out of office for reducing Nicaraguans to "beggars."
