One person has died and another is in reportedly critical condition following a crash on a dirt road in north La Pine last evening when the driver lost control and rolled the pickup several times, deputies reported.

Deschutes County Sheriff’s deputies responded to the report of a rollover crash on S. Huntington Road near Riverview Drive about 8:30 p.m. on June 25, and found both occupants of a 1994 Ford Ranger pickup had been ejected and were lying in the road, Deputy Kevin Turpen and Sgt. Ronny Dozier wrote in a news release.

Deputies began CPR on 26-year old Jesse L. Belt of La Pine until La Pine Paramedics arrived and took over life-saving attempts.

Rebecca A. Bassett, a 33-year old Gilchrist resident, was flown by AirLife helicopter to St. Charles Medical Center where she was receiving treatment in the critical care unit for undetermined injuries, the deputies said.  Belt was pronounced deceased at the scene.

Preliminary investigation indicates that the vehicle was traveling south on a dirt portion of S. Huntington Road when the driver lost control and rolled several times.  “It does not appear that either occupant was wearing a safety belt,” the deputies said, but did not disclose any further details including who was driving the vehicle.

The investigation is ongoing.
