Homeowners were awakened early Monday morning by a smoke detector and were able to quickly escape a fire that caused over $1.6 million in damage to their northwest Bend home, fire officials said.
The cause of the fire is undetermined, but built-in natural gas appliances located on the exterior deck of the home will be further examined as a possible source.
According to Deputy Fire Marshal Susie Lovisco with the Bend Fire Department, three engine companies and 13 fire personnel responded to 1564 NW Overlook Drive in the Awbrey Butte neighborhood about 12:30 a.m. on Monday, August 28 to find heavy smoke and the attic of the 4,000 square foot home on fire. Shortly after they arrived the roof collapsed. Crews remained on the scene overnight.

The home was valued at $1,400,000 and contents at $1,500,000. Vehicles on the premises were valued at $90,000. Losses were estimated at $900,000 to the structure, $700,000 to the contents, and $15,000 to automobiles.
