ALGECIRAS, Spain - Spanish police have reportedly arrested two people in the kidnapping of a young English girl abducted from a resort apartment in Portugal.

Details of the arrest were sketchy. A spokeswoman for the Spanish police said she could confirm only one arrest, that of an Italian man. Some Spanish television stations reported two men were picked up while there were also reports of a Portuguese woman, British newspapers reported.

The arrests took place in Algeciras in southern Spain, which has ferry connections to Morocco.

Madeleine McCann, 4, disappeared nearly two months ago. Her parents had left their three young children sleeping in a room of their holiday apartment on the Algarve and were eating in a restaurant where they could see the room's windows.

News reports suggested the arrest might involve charges of trying to extort money from Kate and Gerry McCann. The couple, both doctors who live in Rothley, Leicestershire, have been traveling around Europe publicizing the case. Rewards totaling 2.5 million pounds ($5 million) have been offered for information in the case.
