SANTIAGO, Chile - A moderate earthquake Thursday rattled central Chile, registering 5.6 on the Richter scale but causing little damage, the U.S. Geological Survey said.

The quake followed reports earlier this month that a lake in southern Chile has disappeared in a matter of months, possibly due to a strong quake.

From March to May, virtually all the water was drained from the 5-acre lake fed by glacial water deep in the heart of southern Chile, La Tercera newspaper reported Wednesday.

The nation's strongest earthquake of the 20th century hit Valdivia, Chile, in May 1960, registering 9.5 on the Richter scale.

An estimated 2,000 were killed and 2 million lost their homes in that quake.
