BAGHDAD, Iraq -- At least 40 explosions damaged Baghdad's fortified Green Zone Tuesday in the worst attack since April 2004, it was reported.
Mortar shells struck throughout the Green Zone as helicopters flew overhead and columns of thick smoke and dust rose near the U.S. Embassy and Iraqi government offices, reported KUNA, the Kuwait News Agency.
News correspondents working in Baghdad described it as the worst attack on the area in four years. No information on casualties or damage was immediately available.
On Monday, six Iraqi civilians and three police officers died in separate bomb attacks in Baghdad. The attacks came as police said they had found the bodies of 12 employees of a Pepsi-Cola bottling plant who were kidnapped Sunday. There was no information on the fate of another nine employees abducted from the suburban bottling and distribution plant, CNN reported.
