A teenage driver who allegedly fell asleep at the wheel and crashed into a 5th wheel travel trailer pulled by a pickup in an accident on Highway 20 West that sent one person to the hospital was cited by Deschutes County Sheriff’s deputies.

According to Sgt. DeLuca, 18-year-old Zachary Ybarra of Bend was traveling west on Highway 20 West near the Old Bend-Redmond Highway on July 22 about 4:20 p.m. when he fell asleep, allowing his 1987 Nissan Maxima to drift into the path of oncoming traffic.

Ybarra’s car struck the side of a 5th wheel travel trailer pulled behind a 2001 Chevrolet Silverado pickup, damaging the axles and wheels, DeLuca said.  The pickup’s driver, 58-year old Paul Martin of Cottage Grove, Oregon, was uninjured, as were his passengers, Janet Martin, 58, Tyler Wells, 15, and Michael Raivo, 15.

Ybarra was transported to the emergency room of St. Charles Medical Center by Bend Fire & Rescue personnel where he was treated for unknown injuries sustained in the accident.  Sgt. DeLuca reported that Ybarra was cited for his role in the accident.
