Historical Center Welcomes Unique Western Cookbook Author & Food Writer Sept. 17th

Celebrate and explore culinary adventures and the rich culture of the American West with nationally acclaimed food writer and cookbook author Greg Patent, author of New Frontiers in Western Cooking. Patent’s lecture is sponsored by the Des Chutes Historical Center’s History All Around Series.

Patent will discuss the extensive research and creative process behind the cookbook at a free lecture held in the Brooks Room of the Bend Public Library on Sunday, September 17th at 1:00pm

Through historical research into the journals of the Oregon Trail, Patent explores the notion of what defines “western” cooking—a mixture of immigrant and native influences merging with fresh ingredients unique to the region. Inspired by cooks of the past and the west’s many immigrants, Patent’s cookbook offers more than 125 original recipes of unique western fare such as huckleberry pie, stir-fried pheasant with ginger and orange and sturgeon burgers.

“I have this tendency to look at what we do today, and I always ask-well, where did it come from?” says Patent, “Cooks have left legacies for us to investigate.”

Greg Patent is a food writer and cookbook author who writes a monthly column for Missoula, Montana’s newspaper the Missoulian (http://www.missoulian.com) and is a contributing editor for Cooking Light magazine. He also co-hosts a weekly radio show about food for Montana Public Radio. His cookbook Baking in America, a historical look at America's baking traditions, won the 2003 James Beard Award.

The Des Chutes Historical Center explores the history, culture and heritage of the people of Deschutes County, from the area’s early years to today. The Center is located at 129 NW Idaho and is open Tuesday through Saturday, 10:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.  Admission to the Center is $5 for adult general admission, $2 for children 13-17 years-old, and children 12 years and younger are free with a paid adult admission.
