FORT MCCOY, Wis. -- A Virginia soldier training at Fort McCoy in Wisconsin died of meningitis, the U.S. Army said Tuesday.

The soldier was taken to St. Marys Hospital in Rochester, Minn., and 27 other soldiers -- all members of the 237th Engineer Co. from West Point, Va. -- were treated as a precautionary measure, the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reported.

The soldier, whose name wasn't released, had symptoms of meningococcal meningitis, which is spread through close contact.

Officials at Fort McCoy said there was no danger to the rest of the base, which is near Tomah, in west central Wisconsin.
