MIAMI -- Tropical Storm Dean raced across the Atlantic on Tuesday, heading for the Lesser Antilles.

The storm was still far from land Tuesday afternoon, the National Hurricane Center in Miami reported. In late afternoon, the eye of the storm was 1,140 miles west of the Cape Verde Islands and 1,390 miles east of the Lesser Antilles, barreling westwards at almost 21 miles per hour.

Dean was expected to get stronger during the next day. In late afternoon, Dean had maximum sustained winds of up to 40 miles an hour and tropical-storm winds extending 35 miles from the center.

Forecasters say that Dean is likely to cross the chain of the Antilles on Friday, pass south of Puerto Rico on Saturday and approach Jamaica on Sunday if it remains on the current track.
