BRUSSELS -- Denmark is in the race to claim rights to the Arctic’s Lomonsov Ridge underwater mountain range.

A research team with specialists from Canada, Denmark and Sweden set off Sunday from northern Norway. They are searching for evidence the mountain range is attached to the Danish territory of Greenland, the EU Observer said Wednesday.

Canada, Russia, the United States and Norway also have laid claims to the Arctic region.

The U.S. Geological Survey has suggested as much as 25 percent of the world's undiscovered oil and gas could be hidden beneath the shrinking polar ice cap. The newspaper said global warming could also some day open new shipping lanes between the Atlantic and Pacific oceans.

The North Pole seabed currently is not regarded as part of any single country's territory.
