Robert Greygrass, Lakota activist and actor, will present a workshop about recognizing racism from 2 to 4 p.m. on Wednesday, October 4, in Hitchcock Auditorium on the Central Oregon Community College campus. A reception will follow. The workshop is free, and the public is invited.

The theater-based workshop will include activities that encourage participants to explore the human experience and rearrange their own past to understand how to approach something differently, according to Greygrass.

Growing up in California, far from his Lakota and Cherokee roots, Greygrass has experienced many of the problems facing urban Native Americans. Learning the language, history and stories of his ancestors led to years of activism with the American Indian Cultural Center and a love of acting. He has worked with at-risk youth on reservations, schools, summer camps and shelters for more than 15 years. He performed with the Oregon Shakespeare Festival for four years ― winning best actor in 1993 and 1994 ― and has toured with his own one-man show.

The workshop is sponsored by the college’s Native American Program, in cooperation with the Associated Students of COCC and the Office of Student Life.
