BEIT LAHIA, Gaza -- Israel military forces Friday destroyed a Gaza Strip tunnel believed to provide passage for militants to attack Israel, Haaretz reported Friday.
The forces blew up the Gaza tunnel, the opening of which was discovered Tuesday near the Gaza-Israel border, on the outskirts of the northern Gaza Strip village Beit Lahia.
The Golani infantry brigade made the discovery while they were operating in the northern Gaza Strip and following information from military intelligence sources, who said the tunnel was intended to help facilitate a large-scale terror attack in an Israeli town just north of Gaza.
Haaretz said tunnels are increasingly employed as a means to infiltrate Israel and execute militant attacks. In addition, they are often used to smuggle in weapons and illegal contraband.
