A speeding car left Tumalo Reservoir Road late Friday night, traveled 180 feet along the shoulder and ditch, smashed into a juniper tree, spun around nearly 180 degrees and toppled the tree.  Both occupants of the car were sent to the hospital, and authorities say alcohol is a suspected contributing factor to the cause of the crash.

Deschutes County Sheriff’s deputies and members of the Bend Fire Department responded to the scene of the single-vehicle accident east of Tyler Road shortly after 11 p.m. September 22, according to a news release by
Sgt. Dan Swearingen and Deputy Randall Zilk.

Deputies found a 1990 blue Chevy Camaro off the south side of the road.

The driver, Joshua D. Zukoski, a 24-year old Bend resident, was taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.  The passenger, 26-year old Angelee Wiitenan of Bend, was also transported to St. Charles Medical Center-Bend, for observation.  She was later released. Zukoski was reportedly not wearing a seat belt, but Wiitenan was properly restrained.

Zilk and Swearingen said information will be forwarded to the district attorney’s office for possible charges of driving under the influence of intoxicants, reckless driving and recklessly endangering another person.
