JUPITER, Fla. - Long-time U.S. Rep. Charles Vanik, D-Ohio, died Friday at his home in Florida at the age of 94.

Vanik represented parts of the Cleveland area from 1955 to 1981 and was best known as a co-author of the 1974 Jackson-Vanik amendment that requires the United States to take human rights records into account before striking trade deals with other nations.

He became a senior member of the House Ways and Means Committee and was an outspoken critic of special interest groups and tax loopholes for big business, the Cleveland Plain-Dealer said.

Vanik, the son of Czech immigrants, died in his sleep at his home in Jupiter. Funeral services will be Saturday in North Palm Beach, Fla., with memorials to be scheduled in Cleveland and Washington.
