On Saturday, October 20, Black Butte Ranch Police officers and fire department paramedics responded to Bishops Cap and Ponderosa Street about 6 p.m. to the report of an injury car crash.

According to a news release prepared by Officers Elliott and Lettenmainer, an investigation revealed that Ross A. McEvers, 25, was traveling south on Bishops Cap when he lost control of his 2001 Volkswagen Jetta, crossed a bike path, and crashed head-on into a Ponderosa Pine tree that subsequently snapped off and fell on his vehicle, trapping him inside.

Bystanders removed the tree and McEvers exited the Jetta, the officers said.  He was transported by paramedics to St. Charles Medical Center in Bend for treatment.  While receiving treatment in the emergency room, McEvers attempted to flee, Elliott and Lettenmainer reported.  With the assistance of the Bend Police Department, he was located a short while later and returned to the hospital.

Following his release from medical care, McEvers was arrested and lodged in the Deschutes County Jail.  He is charged with driving under the influence of intoxicants and reckless driving, although the case remains under investigation and other charges may follow, police said.

Anyone who may have witnessed the incident is asked to contact Officer Elliott or Lettenmainer at 541-595-2191.
